Beim Neugeborenen ist ein Direktnachweis im Urin und Rachensekret erforderlich. Da die Serologie nicht aussagekräftig ist, bedingt durch die Leihimmunität der Mutter. Zudem ist eine Sonographie des Feten ratsam.
Eine Testung des Neugeborenen ist bis zum 14 Tag nach Entbindung zur Differenzierung einer kongenitalen versus postpartalen Primärinfektion bei entsprechender Fragestellung empfohlen.
